Calling all Phoenix nature lovers, hikers, desert plantophiles, and wildlife enthusiasts! Help the Maricopa County Master Naturalists document our urban biodiversity this April 24–27.
Anyone can join! You don't need any prior experience, special training, or a scientific background to participate. This event is about curiosity, observation, and contributing to real science.
All the life you see that you didn't plant or buy yourself counts—from the bees and butterflies in your space to the native weeds growing next to the trash can!
No experience needed | All ages welcome | Use your phone to participate

While the City Nature Challenge (CNC) is a global event, our focus in the Greater Phoenix Area is bringing people together locally to explore, learn, and connect with nature. Instead of a competition, this is about collective impact—every single observation matters.
Whether you are hitting the trails at Camelback Mountain or South Mountain, exploring your local park, or just looking at the plants and bugs in your own backyard or alleyway, your volunteer community science documentation helps collect urban biodiversity data that supports conservation and research. Plus, aligning with the America250 celebration, documenting wildlife with the iNaturalist app counts toward the global Citizen Science Month goal of generating "One Million Acts of Science"!
Our goal this year is to work as a team to double our participation and observations from last year. We are focusing on quality over quantity, and we challenge each participant to make 125 quality observations over the weekend so we can hit this milestone as a community!
We are hosting free practice hikes across the valley to help you sharpen your observation skills and learn how to use the app!

Can’t make it in-person? Practice with us online on April 21st at 6pm.

The Maricopa County Master Naturalists are thrilled to be a co-organizer of the Greater Phoenix Area CNC for its 6th year, alongside incredible partners like EcoExplorers, Mary Lou Fulton College for Teaching and Learning Innovation at ASU, SciStarter, Maricopa County Parks and Recreation, Desert Botanical Garden, Arizona Science Center, Arizona Game and Fish and more!
As a local chapter of the statewide Arizona Master Naturalist Association, our volunteers are dedicated to supporting our local environment. All of our chapter's activities, reporting, and mission-driven work are categorized under three core pillars:
We believe that anyone can be a community scientist. By participating in this event, you are taking the first step in helping us protect the beautiful desert we call home.

If you love learning about native plants and animals, we invite you to stay connected.
